I've been reading the Aeneid lately, between studying for classes, and working on my climbing, and it's a great joy. I don't have time to write, but I want to say that, despite what the real classicists think, the poetry of it is much more striking than that of Homer. Homer's works always felt like great stories - maybe the best stories ever - and the Aeneid does not challenge this. But it is lyrical and beautiful in a way that Homer is not.
These ancients knew what was valuable in a man - strength, wisdom, patience, and, yes, intelligence.
